July: ruby + lotus

I always loved birthstones, zodiac animals, handwriting personality tests -- anything that assigned stuff to you -- and visualizing the different combinations as characters. As a younger child, I specifically latched onto drawing the sisters from “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” as personifications of each month’s birthstone and birthflower. It was the perfect intersection of all my obsessions, including fairy/folktales and designing costumes. These paintings are an updated retelling of those princesses, each representing a month and its associated birthstone and flower. I think fourth-grade-me would be pretty impressed.
